Bedrock questions with the evidence attached
Every answer is short, states its confidence level, and links where the claim came from. Where the honest answer is “check your own store”, it says so instead of guessing.

Verified Mojang states Java Edition runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, while Bedrock Edition runs on Windows 10 and 11, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android and iOS. They use different multiplayer servers, so their players cannot play together. Bedrock also adds the Marketplace and add-ons, and is the only edition with console split-screen.
Longer version: the edition decision guide. Source
Verified No. Mojang lists Bedrock on Windows, consoles and mobile, and lists Java as the edition available on Mac and Linux. A Mac cannot join a Bedrock world, so if the rest of your group is on consoles, a Mac-only player cannot play with them. This is the most costly assumption buyers make.
Verified Mojang states that Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC contains both editions for one price, and that owning one edition entitles you to the other. Important caveat: you still have to launch the edition your friends are using, because owning both does not merge the two multiplayer networks.
Variable As a planning rule: one copy per device ecosystem, plus a Microsoft account per player. The exception is console split-screen, where several players share one console and its single copy — which is why a console is often the cheapest way to get two children playing.
Licence and family-sharing terms are set by each individual store, so confirm on the storefront you buy from. Full planning table: household licence checklist.
Verified No, it is a paid game sold through platform stores. Mojang does publish an official free trial, but availability and length differ by platform, so check the official trial page rather than assuming.
Any site offering a free full copy, an installer, or an unusually cheap key is not a legitimate source. Official free trial · download safely

Playing together
Verified No. Mojang states that although both editions support online multiplayer, they use different servers, and therefore Java and Bedrock players cannot play together. Ask friends which edition they own before buying.
Verified On a Windows PC, an internet connection is all you need. Mojang notes that online play on consoles can typically only be accessed through a platform subscription such as the Xbox online service, PlayStation Plus or Nintendo Switch Online.
Variable Tier names and prices change, so confirm on the console’s own store. Source
Verified Yes, provided all of them are running Bedrock, everyone is on the same game version, and each player is signed in to a Microsoft account. Mojang lists a Microsoft account as a cross-play requirement.
Full conditions: the four cross-play conditions. Source
Verified Yes, but only on consoles — Mojang states that only the console versions of Bedrock support local split-screen. It is not available on PC or mobile.
User-reported Community documentation reports up to four players, no split-screen on featured servers, and the newer graphics mode being disabled. Online entitlement rules differ by platform; console sharing or a family plan may cover more than one profile. Community source
Verified Account privacy settings can block multiplayer. A parent in the family group controls a child account’s Xbox privacy settings, but the same symptom can also have another cause.
User-reported It is widely reported that the child must sign out and back in before the change takes effect, and that the controls only appear if the account is genuinely classified as a child. Step-by-step: elimination checklist · Xbox family settings
Verified They are a list of partner-run servers built into the Bedrock main menu, and Mojang states they require a Microsoft account to join. No IP address or download is needed.
On safety, be clear-eyed: these are public spaces run by third parties, each setting its own rules, chat handling and optional purchases. If you want a controlled environment for a child, a private world or a Realm is the appropriate choice, and platform-level chat and multiplayer controls are where you enforce it. Family settings
Subscriptions & spending
Verified Standard Bedrock Realms supports the owner plus 2 other simultaneous players. Realms Plus supports the owner plus 10. Java Realms is a separate Java-only subscription. Official comparison
Source · Realms page · larger groups: dedicated server
Verified Bedrock Realms supports the owner plus 2 and does not include Marketplace Pass. Realms Plus supports the owner plus 10 and includes Marketplace Pass. Java Realms is separate and does not carry over to Bedrock.
Variable Current tiers and prices are on the official plan comparison, which is the only figure worth acting on. Official plan comparison
Verified No, and you cannot. Mojang states that Realms Plus includes Marketplace Pass, that the content catalogue is the same for both, and that active Realms Plus subscribers are unable to subscribe to Marketplace Pass. Mojang also advises unsubscribing from Marketplace Pass first if you want to move to Realms Plus.
So: pick Marketplace Pass if you only want content, or Realms Plus if you also want a private world. Source
User-reported Subscription catalogue content is access rather than ownership: it depends on the subscription staying active and on the item remaining in the catalogue. Exactly what persists after cancellation, and for how long, is documented by the community rather than stated plainly on the product page.
Because this is a money question, do not rely on us: confirm with the store you subscribed through before cancelling, especially if a child’s long-running world depends on subscription content. Community source
Verified Minecoins are the currency for individual Marketplace purchases, bought with real money through your platform store.
Because they are bought at the platform level, the effective control is also at the platform level: purchase approval and spending limits in the family settings, configured before the Marketplace is first opened. User-reported Community documentation notes the currency appears under a different name on PlayStation and is sold separately there. Official Minecoins page · before you buy for a child
Variable The policy that applies is the one belonging to the store that took the payment — Microsoft, Apple, Google, Sony, Nintendo or Amazon — not Mojang. Contact that store directly.
We cannot tell you whether a specific refund will be granted, and any site that promises one is guessing. For account and purchase problems generally, start at the Minecraft Help Center.
Devices & versions
Verified Bedrock supports add-ons — behaviour and resource packs that change blocks, mobs, recipes and world rules inside Mojang’s framework — and Microsoft publishes creator documentation for building them.
It does not run Java code-level mods, and Java does not run Bedrock packs. If someone specifically wants large modpacks or mod loaders, that requirement points at Java, and add-ons will not substitute. Creator docs · more detail
Verified Mojang states Vibrant Visuals arrived in Bedrock Edition in version 1.21.90, adding directional lighting and volumetric fog, with default presets since tuned per device. Microsoft’s documentation describes it as a rendering change that runs locally and makes no gameplay changes, so each player chooses whether to enable it.
User-reported Community documentation reports it is unsupported on ChromeOS, Amazon Fire and the original Nintendo Switch, and hardware-dependent elsewhere. The reliable test is whether the option appears in your own Video settings. Mojang · device breakdown
Announced Nintendo has announced a Nintendo Switch 2 version arriving 27 October, with Vibrant Visuals as the default visual experience there and a digital upgrade path for existing Switch owners, with further details still to follow.
As of 28 August 2026 that release has not happened, so it should not factor into a purchase you make today. Minecraft does run on the original Nintendo Switch now. Nintendo announcement
Verified No. Mojang states that on Bedrock you can only play the latest stable version or a beta or preview build, whereas Java can launch any past release version from the launcher.
Two consequences: everyone in a group must be on the same version to play together, and if you need a specific older build for any reason, Bedrock is the wrong edition. Source
User-reported Not automatically. A world hosted on a Realm is reachable from any device with access, which is the simplest route. A local single-player world needs a deliberate export or upload step, and the exact method differs by platform.
Bedrock worlds are not interchangeable with Java worlds. Because losing a world is genuinely upsetting and entirely preventable, set up a backup habit early: backup and transfer.
Verified Chromebook: yes. Mojang announced Bedrock for Chromebook, bought through the Google Play Store, and noted a discount for owners of the Android version.
User-reported Amazon Fire: community documentation reports Bedrock runs on recent Fire OS devices, but also that Marketplace Pass cannot be purchased on Fire even though content works if you subscribed elsewhere. Verify on the Amazon listing before buying for a Fire tablet. Chromebook source
Safety, accounts & this site
Verified This site is a Minecraft: Bedrock Edition download and reference site. Download the game from the Download page for your device.
Our sourcing method and corrections policy: sources and trust.
Enter your Microsoft password in only two places: the official game client, and a Microsoft sign-in page. No fan site, skin site, server listing or “free Minecoins” page needs it, and this site will never ask for it.
For child accounts, use the family group controls to manage multiplayer, friends and spending. For account recovery, go through the Minecraft Help Center rather than any third party offering to help. Xbox family settings
Bedrock is distributed through platform stores, not as a standalone installer from a website. So if a file you downloaded from a website is flagged, treat that as information about the website rather than about Minecraft.
Delete it and download Minecraft Bedrock from this site instead. The dedicated server package is Mojang’s own Bedrock dedicated server, taken from minecraft.net.
Variable Ratings differ by regional board, so there is no single correct figure to quote and we will not invent one. The rating that applies to you is printed on your own platform’s store listing.
For North America, the ESRB’s public rating search is authoritative. Note that a rating covers the base game, not the behaviour of strangers on third-party servers — that is what the family and chat controls are for. ESRB rating search
Assume the official page wins. Subscription tiers, device support and store availability all change without notice, which is why answers on this page carry a label and a link rather than a confident number.
Our review date, what we consider volatile, and how corrections are handled are all set out on the sources and trust page.
Not answered here? The deeper material lives on the compatibility matrix, the household licence checklist, and the multiplayer elimination checklist. For a genuine fault, the Minecraft Help Center is the correct destination.
